Dark Night of the Soul
In 1997 Ana Maria Pacheco was appointed fourth Associate Artist at the National Gallery, London. The Associate Artist scheme carries with it the requirement to make new work inspired by the collection for exhibition at the close of the residency. Ana Maria Pacheco is a sculptor, painter and printmaker and created works in all three mediums. The main focus of the exhibition was a multi-figure sculpture in polychromed wood - Dark Night of the Soul - and paintings in oil on gesso: Luz Eterna (triptych) and Queen of Sheba and King Solomon in the Garden of Earthly Delights. A catalogue and video were produced to accompany the exhibition, which went on tour to four further venues in the UK. Both the catalogue and video are available from the National Gallery Company.
